6.3 Vapor Monitoring
During the excavation of hydraulic oil impacted soil, there may be organic vapors encountered.
The SSHO will be responsible for monitoring the air for organic vapors with an organic vapor
analyzer (OVA). All measurements will be taken in the "breathing zone" of the individual. If
vapor levels are above 50 parts per million (ppm), work will be halted and personnel will move
upwind from the source of the vapors. Personnel will upgrade from Level D to Level C and then
work can proceed. The SSHO will determine when the vapor level is safe for personnel to return
to Level D PPE.
6.4 Action Levels
Work area action levels are based on real-time monitoring results. Monitoring for cold, noise,
and organic vapors will be maintained during site activities. Monitoring results will dictate the
appropriate actions. Specific action levels based on air monitoring results are presented in Table
6-1.
Table 6-1
Air Monitoring Action Levels
Monitoring
Concern Activity Device Frequency Action Level Action
Noise Heavy equipment Sound Level As deemed >85 dBA Don hearing protection
operation Meter necessary by
SSHO
Organic Excavation/ Organic 30 to 60 Background to Level D PPE
Vapors soil sampling/ Vapor minutes 50 ppm
water sampling Analyzer
Organic Excavation/ Organic 30 to 60 >50 ppm Move upwind of vapor
Vapors soil sampling/ Vapor minutes source, until personnel are
water sampling Analyzer in clean air.
