OES-Di Salva Trucking Facility
Ltr Addendum
February 21,1995
a Page-2
f' I
and trap procedure to prepare the sample and gas chrome ography - fame ionization detector (GC-
FID) to identify hydrocarbon constituents in the soil. Because of the elevated boiling point of diesel I
fuel, Method 8015 is typically modified (8015/Mod) to include a sample preparation procedure to
capture diesel. However, a standard modification procedure for 8015/Mod does not exit and
modification procedures, therefore, can vary from laborat ry to laboratory. Extraction by sonication
(EPA Method 3550) is one method laboratories use to prepare soil samples to be analyzed for diesel '
fuel.
t
Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendation for P eliminary Evaluation and Investigation of
Underground Tank Sites (Tri-Regional,:Guidelines) recommends the use of EPA Method 3550 when
analyzing for TPH-d- The Leaking Underground Fuel Tank field manual (LUFT manual) does not
specify an extraction method for preparing a soil sample to be analyzed for diesel fuel, however, the
-LUFT inabual does recommien.d"GC-FID as the method--f r`identifying-diesel in soil.-Therefore, when 3
analyzing for TPH-d in soil, the Tri-Regional Guidelines and the LUFT manual collectively
recommend EPA Method 3550 for sample preparation and GC-FID to identify hydrocarbon
constituents. This collective method is`l referred to as Method 3550/LUFT by GeoAnalytical
Laboratories, Inc., the laboratory to which soil samples c llected from the Di Salvo Trucking site
would be delivered. Condor recommended in the September 27, 1994, work plan that Method
3550/LUFT be used for analyses for TPH-d in soil. Therefore, because EPA Method 8015 would not
accurately detect longer chain hydrocarbons which may e present in a soil sample, Condor
recommends to adhere to the analytical methods specifie in the September 27, 1994, work plan.
