Report$OOODd Phan Subsurface Irlveati=ation
City of Stociaon, Banter Island, Stoelaon, CA
May 20, 1992
WD602.1D
t
This report summarizes previous work and describes the project tasks and field methods
employed to evaluate metallic and volatile organic constituents in the soil and groundwater
beneath the Banner Island Property (Figure 1). This supplemental investigation was requested
by the City in anticipation of future development of the property.
2.0 SITE BACKGROUND/PREVIOUS WORK
Banner Island was formerly a delta island that was reclaimed in the twenties. It is unknown
what materials were utilized for reclamation. It has been reported however, that inert municipal
solid waste and dredge spoils werr used as part of the fill (Jim Escobar, City of Stockton, verbal
communication, 1989).
The property under investigation (Figure 2) represents a portion of the former island which was
occupied by a ship building facility from at least the thirties until the site was cleared in the
seventies. The key operational areas of the former shipyard are shown on Figure 2. The
• Banner Island property is presently an undeveloped land area located between Lindsay Street and
the Deep Water Channel.
During November 2 through 6, 1989, WaterWork Corporation (WaterWork)personnel advanced
18 soil borings at the subject property for the purpose of assessing the subsurface conditions.
Sixteen of the soil borings were advanced to a depth of 6 feet below grade. Two soil borings
were advanced to a depth of 40 feet below grade and subsequently completed as groundwater
monitoring wells. The soil boring and monitoring well (MW-1 and MW-2) locations are shown
on Figures 3 and 4, respectively. The two monitoring wells were located in the vicinity of a
former diesel storage area and a former paint storage area (WaterWork, 1990).
twaossi.sr 2
