Report Second Phase Subsurface Inveatieation
City of Stoe]con, Banner Wand, Stockton,CA
May 20, 1942
W0602.1t)
1
The Stockton area has long been recognized as having water quality problems. Deeper wells
routinely exceed the secondary drinking water standards for chloride, iron, manganese, and
TDS. Shallower wells have even poorer quality water due to the additional affects of infiltrating
surface water (DWR, 1967).
Several sources have been identified for the observed poor water quality. These include connate
water contained within fine grained Deltaic sediments, tidal action through the Delta, and
improperly sealed gas wells that tap deeper saline water zones. Thirty four abandoned gas wells
were identified by DWR (1967) but it is believed many more exist.
In the immediate area of the Deep Water Channel infiltration of low quality water is occurring
from the channel itself. Shallow groundwater gradients for three sites adjacent to the Channel
show groundwater moving in various directions away from the Channel. These sites include the
Stockton Police Department, located at Channel Street and El Dorado Avenue, the Southside
• Channel Redevelopment site located at Weber Avenue and Lincoln Street, and the former
Western Pacific Railroad (WPRR) site located at West Lindsay and North Van Buren Street,
adjacent to the Banner Island property to the northwest. Figure 4 shows these sites and their
respective local groundwater gradients. The infiltration of this channel water through fine
grained dredge spoils is also a probable source of the observed poor water quality.
In order to further demonstrate the poor water quality in the Deep Water Channel area, RFSNA
sampled wells located at the above referenced sites. The groundwater samples from the Stockton
Police Station and the Southside Channel Redevelopment site (Figure 4) were submitted to
Sequoia Analytical for analysis of Title 22 Metals. Additionally, three groundwater monitoring
wells were installed at the former WPRR site (Appendix D) concurrent with the Banner Island
R0409023Ar 6
