Report S000nd phase Subsurface[nves iption
City of Stnelaon,Banner Lland, Stockton,CA
May 20, 1992
W06M.1D
t
investigation and were sampled for Title 22 Metals and volatile organics. The results of the
sampling events at the adjacent sites are discussed in Section 6.2.1.
4.0 FIELD WORK
4.1 Drilling/Soil Samoling Description
On March 9 through 13, 1992, seven soil borings (BI-MW-3 through BI-MW-9)were advanced
in the area where the ship building/metal fabrication activities were conducted (Figure 5). The
borings were drilled to a depth of approximately 38 feet below grade, with the exception of
boring BI-MW-3, which was drilled to a depth of approximately 37 feet below grade. All drill
cuttings were placed on plastic sheeting, covered with same, and stored on-site, pending
laboratory analysis. Drilling augers were steam-cleaned before drilling each borehole to avoid
cross-contamination. Water used to clean the augers after drilling each boring was collected and
stored in 55-gallon drums approved for hazardous liquid storage, pending laboratory analysis.
Drilling was conducted by Spectrum Exploration, using a hollow-stem auger drill rig. A field
geologist was present to log all drill cuttings and soil samples utilizing the Unified Soil
Classification System. Descriptions of soil types encountered, sample collection intervals, and
well construction details were recorded on boring/well logs and are included in Appendix B.
Cored soil samples were collected above and below the water table at 5-foot intervals, to total
depth of the boring, and in accordance with the site Soil Sampling Protocol (Appendix A). The
soil samples collected at five feet below grade in each boring were submitted for laboratory
analysis.
The earth materials encountered at the site during this investigation consisted of mostly silts and
clays with sand lenses (Appendix C, Boring/Well Logs). Groundwater was first encountered
in the borings at depths ranging from approximately 25 to 27 feet below ground surface.
R04Mzsnr 7
