The current property owner, Chase Chevrolet, is
performing the quarterly groundwater monitoring.
Area 16
Numerous soil and groundwater investigations have been performed at Area 16 under the
oversight of the SJCEHD. A 1,000 gallon UST which reportedly stored gasoline and diesel was
removed in 1986 and petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was documented during the removal
(AGE, 1996). In 1992, 23 inches of free product was encountered in groundwater monitoring
well MW-3 adjacent to the former UST location. According to Mr. Robert Marty at AGE, a
pneumatic product skimming pump was already installed in MW-3 when they began
groundwater monitoring at the site in 1994 and AGE was not certain when the extraction pump
was installed in well MW-3. The skimming pump was removed in 1996 once the product
• thickness dropped to less than approximately 0.1 inch, and no free product has been found since
1996. Between 1990 and 1994, four groundwater monitoring wells and three soil borings were
completed at the site (RESNA, 1991, 1994). In July 1995, sixteen soil probes were completed on
and off site, with soil samples collected from five probes and groundwater from eleven (AGE,
1995). Five additional wells were installed in late 1995 (AGE, 1995).
Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination includes TPHg, BTEX compounds and MTBE. A soil
vapor extraction and air sparging system was constructed in 1999 to mitigate the soil
contamination, and reportedly began operating in November 1999 (AGE 2000b). Figure 3, from
the 7 February 2000 AGE quarterly groundwater monitoring report for the site, shows the
location of the remediation system and is included in Appendix A. Nine groundwater
monitoring wells are currently being sampled for the owner as part of an ongoing groundwater
monitoring program conducted under the oversight of the SJCEHD. The current property owner,
Chase Chevrolet, is performing the remediation work. No information on the performance of the
treatment system has been released as of this FS.
•
4
25970318.PGS 15 November 2000
