Treadvvell&Rollo
•
1.3 Interim Remedial Measures
1.3.1 Operable Unit 1
No interim remedial measures (IRMs) specific to the soil contamination at OU 1 have been
performed at Areas 10, 11, or 20. All structures at each area have been demolished and
removed.
1.3.2 Operable Unit 2
Interim remedial measures are currently in progress at areas 15, 16, and 21, under the direction
of the SJCEHD. The IRMs specifically address the soil and groundwater contamination caused
by USTs that previously existed at each site.
Area 15
• A significant amount of soil and groundwater investigation work has been performed at Area 15,
under the oversight of the SJCEHD. Underground storage tanks (USTs) which reportedly stored
gasoline, diesel, and trichloroethane (TCA)were formerly located in three areas of the site. The
USTs were removed in 1986 (four tanks) and 1992 (three tanks), and petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination has been documented (AGE 1997).
Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination includes total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as
gasoline (TPHg)diesel (TPHd) and motor oil (TPHmo) and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and
xylenes (BTEX) in soil and groundwater. Additionally, elevated concentrations of arsenic have
been detected in soil at the site.
Volatile organic compounds not associated with petroleum fuel hydrocarbons, including TCA,
1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA),trichloroethene (TCE), and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) have
been detected in groundwater. Concentrations of these compounds have ranged from below
laboratory reporting limits to 61 micrograms per liter (ug/1) (AGE 2000a). There are currently
• 15 groundwater monitoring wells being sampled as part of an ongoing groundwater monitoring
3
25970318.PGS 15 November 2000
