10 August 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0471
Black peat material was noted to have a high petroleum hydrocarbon content at depths of three to
seven feet bsg. Gray green silty sand was observed at depths of seven to eight feet bsg. Soils
observed in the other trenches were a mixture of clay and peat. Typically peat soils extended to
depths of six to seven feet bsg.
In the area of trench T4, black silty clay was observed from depths of six inches to four feet bsg. At
a depth of four feet bsg to a depth of five feet bsg waste material including; bottles, cans, metal,
wood, tires, clothes and other assorted farm wastes were evenly distributed within the clay backfill
material These materials and containers were filled with fluids.
4.2. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF TRENCHING AND STOCK PILE SAMPLES
TPH-g was detected in trench samples T1-E, T1-W and T1-N at concentrations of 19,000 parts per
million(ppm, reported as milligrams per kilogram), 4,900 ppm and 15 ppm, respectively. Benzene
was also detected in the wall samples at concentrations as great as 690 ppm. Sample Tl-Floor had
no detectable hydrocarbons or BTE&X. Significant concentrations of TPH-d and motor oil-range
compounds were detected in the wall samples from trench T1.TPH-d was detected in trench samples
T1-E, T1-W and T1-N at concentrations of 10,000 ppm, 5,900 ppm and 3,600 ppm, respectively.
TPH-mo was detected in the same samples at concentrations of 7,800 ppm, 81 ppm and 330 ppm,
respectively. MTBE was quantified above the method detection limits in sample TI-N at a
concentration of 0.65 ppm.
TPH-d and motor oil range compounds were detected at low concentrations in the floor samples
from trench T2 and T3. TPH-d/TPH-mo were detected in trench samples T2 and T3 at
concentrations of 5.9/41 ppm, and 88/390 ppm, respectively. TPH-g was also detected in the same
soil samples at concentrations of 1.1 ppm and 67 ppm, respectively. MTBE was quantified above
the method detection limits in sample T2 at a concentration of 0.089 ppm.
Other BTE&X compounds were detected at low concentrations in samples T1-1, T2-1 and T4-1.
BTE&X compounds were not detected in sample T3-2.
TPH-d was detected at low concentrations in trench samples from the excavation established next
to the large AST. Sample T4-1 had TPH-d detected at a concentrations of 2.4 ppm.The same sample
had detectable TPH-mo at a concentration of 6.0 ppm. Toluene and xylene were detected in the same
sample at concentrations of 0.011 ppm and 0.008 ppm, respectively. No other samples from trench
T4 had detectable concentrations of petroleum-hydrocarbons.
Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in two of the three samples collected from the trenches
Advanced GeoEnviron mental,Inc.
