Report of Findings—Dairy Waste Removal Page 3
Teixeira—Souza Dairy November 27,2006
WKA No.6504.07
Visual Observation of Waste Removal
Waste removal activities conducted by ALP consisted of pumping liquids from the wastewater
and drainage ponds to access the sludge and waste for removal, excavation of the dairy waste,
and removal of existing structures to access the underlying waste. Observation of the excavation
activities included identifying soil that had been impacted by operations at the dairy, typically in
the form of excess organics and buried debris, and requesting that it be removed. Any
encountered buried debris was separated from the manure and impacted soils.
During the initial phase of waste removal, waste was identified as extending below several of the
structures. These structures were removed so the underlying waste could be excavated.
Significant quantities of waste were removed from beneath the footprints of the former barn,
corrals, and animal holding areas (Figure 2). Waste and sludge were removed from the
wastewater and drainage ponds to a depth just above groundwater(approximately 12 feet below
ground surface). The waste removal process continued until no visible organic material
associated with the former dairy was present in any exposed soil.
Waste Spreading
Excavated waste, manure, sludge, and impacted soil were subsequently transported and spread
on the adjacent agricultural fields,to the west of the former dairy, a typical dairy operation and
maintenance practice. The waste was then disced into the native soil to facilitate breakdown of
the organic material.
Visual Confirmation of Waste Removal
Following excavation and removal of all identified waste, WKA representatives visually
inspected soil conditions to determine if all waste and impacted soil had been removed from the
former dairy. Visual inspection included hand excavating below the existing grade across the
Site or below the areas where waste had been removed to confirm that removal activities were
effectively implemented. Visual inspection was also conducted during the spreading activities to
ensure the waste was not being spread too aggressively to reduce the effects of the natural
breakdown of the organic material.
