FLUOR DANIEL GTI
TASK 2: SOIL BORINGS/SOIL BORING SAMPLING
Fluor Daniel GTI will drill four on-site soil borings at the locations shown on Figure 2 using direct push
technology(DPT)drilling techniques. The borings will be drilled to approximately 5 feet below first
encountered groundwater. Groundwater at the site is expected to be encountered approximately 8 to 10
feet below ground surface (BGS). The locations of these borings may be adjusted due to unforeseen
subsurface structures and utilities.
Soil samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals from each soil boring beginning at 5 feet BGS using hollow
2-foot-long by 1.5-inch-outside diameter(O.D.) stainless-steel drive casing lined with brass tube sample
inserts. The sampling equipment will be cleaned between each sampling interval. Each soil sample will be
screened for hydrocarbon vapors using a photoionization detector(PID). Soils encountered during drilling
will be logged using the Unified Soil Classification System by a Fluor Daniel GTI field geologist, working
under the supervision of a California registered geologist. One sample tube from each sampling interval
will be sealed with teflon sheets, capped, taped, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated container. The
samples will be analyzed by a State-certified analytical laboratory(NEI/GTEL in Wichita, Kansas) for
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX), methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE), and total petroleum
hydrocarbons-as-gasoline (TPH-G) by Environmental Protection Agency methods 5030/8020/8015
modified. If MTBE is detected by EPA method 8020, its presence will be confirmed using EPA method
8260. An additional soil sample from one of the four soil borings will be analyzed for Polynuclear Aromatic
Hydrocarbons (PAH), Priority Pollutant Metals, and Pesticides by EPA methods 8310, 6010/7000, and
8080, respectively.
TASK 3: GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Following installation of the soil borings and extraction of the geoprobe sampling rods, a temporary well
casing constructed of 1-inch-diameter slotted PVC casing will be installed in each boring. Groundwater will
be allowed to accumulate in the casing and grab water samples will be collected at each location in
40-milliliter vials and 1-liter ambler and plastic bottles. The samples will analyzed for BTEX, MTBE, and
TPH-G by EPA method 8020/8015 modified. If MTBE is detected by EPA method 8020, its presence will
be confirmed using EPA method 8260. In addition, one groundwater sample from one of the four soil
borings will be analyzed for PAH, Priority Pollutant Metals, and Pesticides by EPA methods 610,
6010/7000, and 8080, respectively. Following completion of groundwater sampling, the casing will be
removed and each soil boring will be grouted to the surface with neat cement.
0544ases.wkp(Sthl-)
Work Plan for Environmental Site Assessment July 18, 1997
The Southland Corporation,Southwest corner of Grant Line Road and Pombo Drive,Tracy,CA 2
