Ameron Dualoy° Pipe Monitoring System
It should be noted that the design characteristics of this particular Ameron double
wall system greatly reduces the probability of a catastrophic failure of the inner pipe.
The clamshell fittings around the outer wall reinforce the joints of the inner wall,
increasing the total integrity of the system. In fact with this system it is difficult to
provide a reasonable mechanism for a catastrophic failure of only the inner wall. A
completely catastrophic event such as trenching across the pipe will of course result in
a loss of fuel to the environment as would be true for any other system using either
vacuum or pressure in the interstice. In any case, if the secondary containment is not
breached no product will be lost to the environment.
The restriction of the flow under uncontrolled conditions is also a safety feature of
the Ameron system. By the flow being relatively low in these conditions, the reservoir
will not overfill prior to alarm and/or shut down and the top of the reservoir will not be
"blown off' by any unlikely failure.
The system demonstrates itself to be extremely sensitive to small leaks.
Because of the narrow interstice and the stiffness of the fiberglass material, the effects
of transients, such as pulses from nozzle shut-off, pump starts and improbable
catastrophic failures will be modulated. Each of these is the preferred response.
