10 April 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 02-0912
DRILLING AND SAMPLE COLLECTION
On 02 April 2002, three soil probe borings (P-1 through P-3) were advanced at the site as part of
assessment activities. The field work was conducted as outlined in the AGE-prepared,Phase HSite
Assessment Work Plan, dated 22 March 2002.
Soil probe borings P-1 through P-3 were advanced utilizing a truck-mounted Geoprobe 5400,
equipped with 1.125-inch diameter probe rods with an attached 2.15-inch diameter soil sampler,
using "direct push" technology. The three borings were advanced vertically to depths of 48 feet
below surface grade(bsg) for collection of soil samples and grab ground water samples.
Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals to 30 feet bsg in borings P-1 through P-3;soil samples
were not collected below 30 feet bsg. Each sample was collected utilizing a 1.125-inch Geoprobe
soil sampling assembly loaded with four six-inch brass sleeves. After collection, the ends of the
second brass sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The sleeve was
labeled with soil probe boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials and then placed in
a chilled container.
Grab ground water samples were collected from probe borings P-1 through P-3 using a temporary
PVC screen. The probe rods were advanced to a depth approximately four feet below the inferred
water table(approximately 48 feet bsg). The hollow-steel rod assembly was pulled up approximately
4 feet, and a screened casing was inserted into the saturated zone.Ground water was allowed to enter
the casing, and samples were retrieved using a modified PVC tubing bailer. Sufficient sample was
collected to fill five 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0.5 ml 18%hydrochloric acid as
a preservative. The ground water sample containers were labeled with probe boring designation,
date, time, and samplers initials and then placed in a chilled container.
Following soil and ground water sample collection, all probe-boring locations were backfilled to
surface grade with Portland cement.
EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to sample collection, Geoprobe soil sampling equipment was thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after being washed with a solution of Alconox. Geoprobe rods were thoroughly cleaned prior
to soil probe boring advancement.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
