Soil borings will be advanced by a truck-mounted Geoprobe 5400 (or 6600) percussion/probing
machine, equipped with a GH-40 percussion hammer. The percussion/probing machines will advance
a 1.5-inch carbide-tipped drill bit through the bituminous-concrete pavement or portland-cement-
concrete pavement to allow the probe rods and soil sampler access to the subsurface soils. Discrete
sampling will be performed by driving a large-bore sampler assembly. The large-bore sampler assembly
will be driven 2 feet to completely fill the sample tube. The large-bore sampler will be decontaminated
after collecting each soil sample. The decontamination sequence will consist of gross soil removal,
scrubbing with a solution of Alconox detergent and potable tap water, and a potable tap water rinse.
Soil samples will be collected for chemical analysis by driving a large-bore sampler (1.375-inch outer
diameter, 24-inch inner length) by use of a percussion hammer. The samples will be collected in
Cellulose Acetate Butyrate(CAB)liners that measured 1.0625 inch in diameter and 22 inches in length.
At the desired sample depth, the CAB liners will be cut to a length of 6 inches. Ends of the CAB liners
will be sealed with teflon film, followed by vinyl end caps. The sealed liners will be labeled, placed
in plastic zip-lock bags, and immediately stored in a cooler at approximately 4°C. Samples from soil
borings B3, B12 and B13 will be labeled for analysis by DOHS LUFT procedure for diesel. Samples
from soil borings B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B10, B11, B12 and B13 will be labeled for analysis
by EPA Method 418.1 for total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH) and EPA Method 8260
for volatile organics (VO). Samples from soil borings B12 and B13 will be labeled for analysis by
6020A for metals (CAM-17). The information below will be written on every sample label:
• Sample identification number,
• Date and time of sampling,
• Name and telephone number of sample collector.
Samples will be delivered to American Scientific Laboratories. Strict chain-of-custody documentation
will be followed in the handling of all samples. A Chain-Of-Custody Record (Appendix C) will
accompany samples when they are shipped to the laboratory. The Chain-of-Custody Record documents
the transfer of samples from one party to another. Other information that will be noted on this form is
as follows:
• Project address,
• Sample identification number,
• Date and time of sampling,
• Type of sample,
• Type of analysis to be performed, and
• Name and telephone number of sample collector.
After the collection of soil samples for chemical analyses, the soil in the remaining portion of the CAB
liner will be used for lithologic description. This soil will be compared to the soil sample for visual
consistency. Lithologic descriptions of soil samples will be recorded on the boring logs in accordance
GEE 3 Work Plan Phase H ESA Stockton
