MIL-D-16627(BuOrd)
4.3.3.3 Procedure.- Insert the solution of the standard dye
prepared in accordance with 4.3.3.1 in the colorimeter and,
using the specified filter, set the percentage transmission
at 50. Then insert the solution of the sample dye and determine
the percentage transmission. Read the percentage concentration
directly from the percentage transmission on the applicable
graph for the particular color dye being tested ( see figure
1 ) . If the percentage concentration is greater than 100,
then the sample is stronger than the standard.
4.3.4 Moisture.- Transfer a weighed portion of approximately
2 grams of the sample to a tared moisture dish and dry in a
sulfuric acid desiccator for 72 hours . The glass dish shall
be such that it can be covered during the weighings, because
of the rapid moisture absorption of the dye. From the loss
in weight , calculate the percentage moisture in the sample.
4.3.5 Fineness.- Place an accurately weighed portion of
approximately 10 grams of the sample on a No. 325 U. S.
Standard sieve assembled with a bottom pan. Brush vigorously,
but not hard enough to injure the sieve, for 10 minutes with
a fairly stiff, round, paint brush. Remove the sieve from
the bottom pan, place it on a piece of clean white paper
and brush again for 3 minutes. Add any material that passes
the screen to the material in the pan. Continue the 3-minute
brushing periods until less than 1 percent of the residue
passes through the screen. Weigh the material retained on
the sieve and calculate the percentage of material passing
through the sieve.
4.3.6 Color stability.- Transfer 2 ml of the dye solution
which was prepared for the concentration test (4.3.3.1) to a
colorless glass test tube and dilute to 30 ml. Hold the solu-
tion up to the light and examine for color change.
5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY
5.1 Packing.- Unless otherwise specified, projectile-spotting
dye shall be delivered in standard 50-pound airtight metal drums
so constructed as to insure acceptance by common or other
carriers, for safe transportation, at the lowest rate, to the
point of delivery.
5.2 Marking.- In addition to any special marking required by
the contract or order, drums shall be marked in accordance with
j the Navy Shipment Marking Handbook.
E
4
E
