The re- <br /> maining portions of the primary samples shall be mixed <br /> together thoroughly and quartered until a composite sample <br /> of approximately 4-ounces is obtained. The composite <br /> sample shall be placed in a rubber-stoppered bottle and <br /> labeled so as to show the name of the material , manufacturer, <br /> plant, contract or order number, number of pounds in the lot <br /> and the lot number. All acceptance tests shall be made on <br /> the composite sample representative of the lot . The primary <br /> samples shall be held for possible future examination should <br /> the composite sample fail to meet the requirements of this <br /> specific ati on. <br /> 4.2 Inspection.- Inspection shall be made at the place of <br /> manufacture, unless otherwise specified. <br /> 4.3 Tests.- The following tests shall be made at the Naval <br /> Powder Factory, Indian Head, Md. , unless otherwise specified. <br /> 4.3.1 Color.- Determine by visual inspection. <br /> 4.3.2 Uniformity.- Place approximately 1 gram of the material <br /> on a piece of white paper and mix well using a spatula. Press <br /> down on the dye with the spatula so as to break up any lumps <br /> or aggregates. The appearance of streaks of different colors <br /> indicates non-uniformity due to poorly mixed components. <br /> 4.3.3 Concentration.- <br /> 4.3.3.1 Test Solutions.- Prepare solutions of the standard <br /> dye (6.2) and the samp a dye in the following concentrations , <br /> using recently boiled distilled water: <br /> Color Weight of dye, gram Volume of solution. ml. <br /> Blue 0.1000 1000 <br /> Green 0.1000 1000 <br /> Red 0.1000 1000 <br /> Orange 0.6250 250 <br /> 4.3.3.2 Apparatus .- The instrument used shall be a photo- <br /> electric colorimeter, Lumetron Colorimeter Model 400 or <br /> equivalent. Filters used shall be as follows : <br /> Color of Dye Filter <br /> Blue Green <br /> Green Orange <br /> Red Orange <br /> Orange Orange <br /> 3 <br />
