L ,, ►
ERu,wf Ohent of Toxic Substances Control i.
Linda S.Adams Maureen F. Gorsen, Director Arnold Schwarzenegger
Secretary for 8800 Cal Center Drive Governor
Environmental Sacramento, California 95826-3200
Protection
April 17, 2008
Dear Community Member:
The purpose of this letter is to introduce myself to you, inform you of a cleanup project in your area
and to invite you to participate in a brief Community Survey which is enclosed. DTSC will oversee a
clean-up of hazardous and non-hazardous materials on the Gordon Research Company
property located at 1085 S. Union Road, Manteca, California, 95337 (Gordon Research).
The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is the regulatory agency providing oversight of
the invest:gatinnS and fultuire cleanu',n, activities nt Su'Ch 2 prnniat In an effort to in olve the
community, DTSC is asking you to participate in a brief community survey to assess community
interest and understand community concerns. Your response to this survey will enable DTSC to
determine the level of community interest, conduct appropriate community outreach activities, and
inform the community of the project's status.
The 5-acre Gordon Research site is bordered by residences on the north, west, and south sides. An
elementary school, Brock Elliot Elementary school, is adjacent to the site at the school's northwest
corner. Gordon Research is fenced on all sides.
Gordon Research was formerly both a family residence as well as a chemical resale business.
Inspections of the property show that a number of chemicals and other materials have been used
and/or stored on the property. Some materials remain in degraded containers in poor condition.
A soil investigation will be conducted to determine if there is any chemical contamination. Chemicals
that might be present include:
• Perchloroethylene — a non-flammable solvent and de-greaser used in dry-cleaning and other
industrial cleaning applications;
• Hyroiodic acid —a corrosive substance used in disinfectants and sanitizers;
• Naptha —a flammable solvent used for cleaning;
• Used industrial batteries — can contain a number of toxic metals such as lead, nickel, and
cadmium;
• Compressed gas cylinders — could be empty or could release gases.
Once DTSC understands what is present there, DTSC will be overseeing the cleanup of Gordon
Research.
Thank you in advance for filling out and returning the enclosed community survey to me by
® Printed on Recycled Paper
