design. The Site 13 DPDO yard landfill covers an area of approximately 1.7 acres of a
several-acre yard. The estimated "fill" volume is 4,000 cubic yards. Activities at the
former landfill site included storage of scrap metal and batteries and the burial of
materials such as cars, trucks, electronic equipment, clothing, shoes, sheet metal,
furniture, scrap metal, and batteries. Additionally, batteries were broken open to
reclaim the lead, and the acid was dumped on the ground. Debris is present at the
ground surface at several places across the site although NWS Earle public works
performed a partial removal of exposed debris in 1997. Chemical hazards at the site
included metals, pesticides, PCBs, VOCs, PAHs, and phthalates. The physical
hazards identified include cold and heat stress, physical hazards associated with the
use of heavy equipment, vehicles and trucks, excessive noise levels from heavy
equipment operations, and biological hazards.
Federal Courthouse Renovation Project, Environmental Health and Safety
Support Services, Milwaukee, WI; Quinn Evans Architects, Ann Arbor, MI and
General Service Administration (GSA), Region 5, Chicago, IL. Provided
environmental health and safety (EHS) services during renovation of select areas of the
Federal Courthouse Building in Milwaukee, WI. Specifically, presence of lead-based
paint (LBP) and asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in areas renovated resulted in
use of work procedures, periodic third-party oversight, clearance testing, and other
environmental management services to ensure that work met current industry
standards and environmental regulations regarding LBP and ACM.
Indoor Firing Range Evaluation and Implementation Plans General Service
Administration (GSA), Region 5, Chicago, IL. Recent projects for evaluation and
implementation plan development of two firing ranges at federal buildings in downtown
Chicago that included compiling indoor firing range design and operations criteria;
inputting this information on a checklist specifically developed to evaluate range safety
and operations relative to regulatory requirements, GSA standards, and industry
practices; reviewing ventilation system performance; collecting occupational exposure
data/airflow data; and observing firing exercises. In addition, prepared cost estimates
for implementing recommended controls and corrections.
Indoor Air Quality Study (IAQ) — Fungal Contamination Focus. Jockey
International Headquarters Facility, Kenosha, WI, 2002. Conducted an indoor air
quality study that focused on establishing an air quality baseline in the areas of the
building affected by a sprinkler system flood event. The primary IAQ contaminants of
concern were microbiological contaminants (in the form of fungal spores), which were
found not to be adversely affecting the building envelope as a result of a recent flood
event.
Industrial Hygiene Monitoring, Grede Foundry, Inc., Liberty Foundry Site,
Wauwatosa, WI, 2001. Industrial Hygienist providing monitoring services at foundry for
airborne respirable silica and dust. Monitoring was done at direction of the EHS director
on selected workers and at various locations throughout the foundry.
Indoor Air Quality Monitoring for Trichloroethene (TCE), Montgomery Watson
Americas, Inc., Milwaukee, WI, 1999. Industrial Hygienist, providing indoor air quality
