piVIRONVIENJAL HEALTH
PERI-11" SERVICE
KLEINFELDER 93OCT -5 PM 2, 12
September 30, 1993
File: 24-220176-D00
Ms. Polly Lowry
California Regional Water Quality Control Board
3443 Routier Road, Suite A
Sacramento, California 95827-3000
Subject: Proposed Groundwater Assessment
Leprino Foods
Tracy, California
Dear Ms. Lowry:
This letter provides additional information regarding the items and questions listed in your
letter to Mr. Ewing of Leprino Foods dated September 24, 1993.
Item 1 The Geoprobe system does allow for the collection of soil samples. Kleinfelder
will collect and analyzed soil samples from the four probe locations around the
containment/excavation area. The soil samples will assess soil contamination,
but we may not know if the soil is the source of groundwater contamination, or
the groundwater is the source of soil contamination.
Item 2 Kleinfelder has proposed the installation of three additional monitoring wells.
The current proposed well locations may be revised based on the results of the
Geoprobe assessment presented in an interim cover letter report. If upgradient
contamination is indicated, one of the three wells will be placed upgradient of
EW-1, or an additional well may need to be installed.
Item 3 The Geoprobe assessment was proposed to assess a large area in a cost efficient
manner. Diesel was the released product and will be the focus of the Geoprobe
assessment. The results of the Geoprobe assessment will be used to position —
groundwater monitoring wells which will be sampled for TPH as gasoline and
BTEX. Sampling of the new and existing wells will be used to assess drinking
water standards.
Item 4 Kleinfelder will allow at least 48 hours between well development and sampling.
Item 5 Kleinfelder will measure depth to water, depth to product and product thickness
in any well that has free product. There are calculations to eliminated the effect
of free product in the groundwater gradient estimate. Kleinfelder will make the
calculations, but will be cautious in the use of the calculated gradient estimation.
We feel that there will be sufficient wells (existing and new) without free
product to allow for a reasonable gradient estimation.
Item 6 The previously excavated soil has been removed from the site. Kleinfelder will
place the soil cuttings from drilling in 55-gallon drums or place the soil on
plastic and cover the soil with plastic. The disposition of the soil will be
determined based on the results of the wells.
24-220176-D00/FL6-112 (1993) Page 1 of 2 September 29, 1993
Copyright 1993 Kleinfelder, Inc.
KLEINFELDER 3077 Fite Circle, Sacramento, CA 95827 (916) 366-1701
