Box 173400 .
Denver, CO 80217-3400
INITIAL GROUND WATER ASSESSMENT REPORT, LEPRINO FOODS, TRACY, SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY
I have reviewed the 20 October 1992 report entitled "Initial Ground Water
Assessment Report" submitted by Kleinfelder for the Leprino Foods (Leprino)
site at 2401 MacArthur Drive in Tracy. The report is incomplete because it
does not include the construction details of extraction well EW-1 and monitor-
ing well MW-1. In addition, the consultant did not adhere to the sampling
procedures described in the 15 July 1992 "Initial Ground Water Assessment Work
Plan. "
The assessment report does not provide information on the casing or screen
material or on the size of the screen slots of EW-1 and MW-1. The report, also
does not state the material used for the filter pack in these two wells.
Procedures described in the 15 July 1992 work plan which were not followed
include field screening of soil samples from thetwoborings, collecting
ground water samples a minimum of 48 hours after developing EW-1 and MW-1 , and
measuring water levels in EW-1 and MW-1 priory-to collecting ground water
samples. In addition, EW-1 was not installed at the location proposed in the
work plan.
The work plan states ". . .borings will be drilled, logged and sampled following
protocol in Appendix B, Sections B-2.1 through B-2.6. " Section B-2.2,
Qualitative Field Screening, states "An organic vapor detector . . . is used to
provide a qualitative screening of each soil sample collected from the
borings. " Section B-2.3, Collection of Soil Samples, states "Soil samples are
collected approximately every 5 feet for field screening and logging. " The
text of the assessment report does not discuss any field screening conducted
on the soil samples, nor are any organic vapor detector results shown in the
logs of EW-1 or MW-1 in Appendix A. The report should include any field
screening results on the soil samples.
As stated in my 14 August 1992 letter, EW-1 and MW-1 . . will not be sampled
until 48 hours after well development." Since the samples collected from EW-1
and MW-1 were collected only 24 hours after these two wells were developed,
the samples may not be representative of the aquifer in the immediate area.
Thus, additional samples need to be collected from these two wells.
My 14 August 1992 letter also stated "Water level measurements will be taken
in MW-1 , EW-1 , and the three Mobil Oil Company monitoring wells on the Leprino
I
I
