The Site has operated as a cheese manufacturing and distribution facility since 1974. In
1992, Leprino employees noticed diesel fuel around the containment area for an aboveground
diesel storage tank. Between 1996 and May 2011, Leprino operated a product recovery system
at the Site. The Report includes a summary of the recent groundwater, soil, and soil vapor
sample results.
Between 1996 and 2004, Leprino installed 29 groundwater monitoring wells, extraction wells,
and recovery wells. Six monitoring wells and one extraction well were subsequently abandoned
to accommodate plant expansion. Leprino operated a product recovery system from 1996 until
2011 when it was shut down to evaluate liquid phase hydrocarbon (LPH) recovery in Site
groundwater. The Site currently consists of thirteen monitoring wells, two extraction wells, and
seven recovery wells. Groundwater flow is to the north-northwest and depth to water is about
12 feet below ground surface. During the third quarter 2012, total petroleum hydrocarbons as
diesel (TPHd) was detected above the water quality objective (WQO) in one well (RW-1). This
is the first detection in this well since March 2008 and no other wells contained petroleum
hydrocarbons above the WQOs. Leprino estimates the mass of TPHd remaining in
groundwater to be about 300 pounds.
Our comments are:
1. Extraction well EW-3 contained LPH in February 2012. Leprino has never collected a
groundwater sample from this location. By 28 June 2013, Leprino needs to remove the
pump from this well, collect a groundwater sample, and analyze the sample for TPHd
and naphthalene. Naphthalene has been detected in soil vapor samples and Leprino
needs to evaluate if it is present in the groundwater in the area.
KARL E. LONOLEY SCD, P.E.. CX.'R I PAMELA C.
