• <br /> samples and when back ilhng the excavation In order to provide a safe workplace for <br /> those persons near or in the excavation, compliance with Cal/OSHA regulations and <br /> AEMC policies and procedures will be strictly followed and enforced- To ensure <br /> compliance, the following guidelines will be followed. <br />• 1 All underground lines must be located before opening the excavation <br /> 2 Notification, using the appropriate form, will be made by phone and in writing to <br /> • Cal/OSHA at least five working days before entry into the excavation This <br /> notification will be made by the AEMC Health and Safety Department <br /> 3 AEMC's Cal/OSHA Excavation Permit must be posted onsite during all site <br /> • operations while the excavation is open <br /> 4 Before entering the excavation, all persons who work around or may enter the <br /> 010 excavation must be trained to prevent, recognize and avoid excavation hazards, <br /> including the following <br /> A. Cave-ins Cave-ins occur when an unsupported wall is weakened or <br /> • undermined by too much weight, or pressure, or an unstable bottom <br /> B Obstacles May cause injuries due to slips, trips or falls <br /> • C Poisonous izases Gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide may <br /> be present in poorly ventilated excavations <br /> D Combustible vapors An odorless gas such as methane or vapors from the <br /> • <br /> sludge material being removed may present a fire and/or explosion hazard <br /> rime io ami s?
