13 July 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 00-0806
• Volatile aromatic hydrocarbons -benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and total xylenes(BTEX)
in accordance with EPA Method 8020; and
• Oxygenated compounds - di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE),
methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE),tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME)and tertiary butanol
(TBA) in accordance with EPA Method 8260 Modified, respectively.
3.0. FINDINGS
Toluene and MTBE were detected in the sample collected from ground water monitoring well MW-3
at concentrations of 3.7 micrograms per liter(µg/1) and 1.8 µg/l, respectively. TPH-g, BTEX and
MTBE were not detected above laboratory reporting limits in the ground water sample collected
from MW-2.
Analytical results of the ground water sample is summarized in Table 1. Copies of the laboratory
report(MAI Lab IDs 70182 and 70183) and chain-of-custody form are included in Appendix B.
60
4.0. DISCUSSION
iy Although the concentrations of toluene and MTBE detected in the ground water sample collected
from MW-3 are minor, the full significance of the detected contaminants cannot be fully evaluated
due to the limited data available. The detected contaminants may represent a limited, minor impact
6W to ground water or may represent the leading edge of a plume migrating from the tank pit or some
other point of origin. Based on the.limited number of sampling points, the extent of petroleum
hydrocarbon-impact to the subsurface cannot be clearly delineated.
5.0. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the analytical results of the ground water monitoring event,AGE recommends additional
subsurface assessment of the subject property to identify the source and assess the magnitude of the
contaminant impact to ground water.
6.0.
