Section 3
Monitoring Network
3.1 MONITORING WELL LOCATIONS AND RATIONALE
The purpose of groundwater monitoring is to provide a measurement of compliance with the
State Antidegradation Policy and to establish background groundwater quality prior to potential
impacts associated with proposed wastewater effluent storage and disposal activities. An
effective groundwater monitoring network will provide at least one clearly"up-gradient"well
and at least two "down-gradient" wells within each geographically distinct storage or disposal
areas. The monitoring network should be designed to allow for normal seasonal fluctuations in
groundwater elevation and horizontal groundwater gradient direction. Additional wells are
commonly required when strong seasonal changes in groundwater gradient are suspected and
when hydrogeologic boundaries, or other conditions, require additional wells to adequately
characterize the site. Such wells must be designed and located to provide representative samples
of groundwater beneath the proposed wastewater disposal site and not create a vertical conduit
for contamination of deeper groundwater. Figure 2 shows the proposed locations of new
monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-8 within the Main Stone property.
3.2 EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES
Equipment decontamination will comprise, at a minimum, of a hot water pressure wash of the
drilling equipment. As a precaution against cross-contamination between boreholes, the drilling
equipment will be decontaminated prior to the start of drilling of the first monitoring well and
between each successive monitoring well borehole.
3.3 HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
3.3.1 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Currently there is no onsite wastewater treatment or disposal structures or activities however
there is wastewater treatment and disposal operations occurring on adjacent properties.
Additionally, there are known fuel and solvent releases in the area. Level D personal protection
equipment comprising of a standard work uniform(coveralls, hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety
glasses, hearing protection, nitrile gloves, etc.) shall be in practice during work at the site.
The practice of good personal hygiene by crew is warranted and will further reduce the exposure
risk. Affected areas of the body shall be washed with clean soapy water followed by a clean
water rinse.
3.3.2 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
The telephone numbers of the appropriate entities to be contacted in case of emergency are as
follows:
May 2006 Main Stone Property
3-1 Effluent Storage and Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Investigation Workplan
