ARCADIS
Mr. Rob Saur
September 3, 2008
Pre-Field Activities
f
Prior to initiating field activities, a utility survey will be conducted to identify and mark
out underground utilities and other potential subsurface obstructions in the vicinity of
,I
the proposed boring locations. The utility survey will include identifying the site using
white paint and obtaining an Underground Service Alert (USA-North)ticket for the
site by calling USA-North at least 48 hours prior to drilling and excavation activities.
Additionally;a private third-party utility-locator will screen all proposed boring
locations to locate nearby underground utilities. A well permit from San Joaquin
County will be obtained prior to the initiation of fieldwork.
Soil Boring Installation
Six soil borings will be advanced to a total depth of 6 feet below ground surface(bgs)
using a 2-inch diameter hand auger. Soil boring locations are shown on Figure 1. Soil
samples will be continuously logged from surface to the total depth of the boring. Soil
samples will be field screened for the presence of volatile organic vapors using a
photoionization detector(PID) and examined for visual indications of the presence of
petroleum hydrocarbons. Soil samples will be logged for lithologic properties
(including soil type, color, moisture content, etc.) using the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS). Hand augers and sampling equipment will be decontaminated with l
a non-phosphate detergent(such as Alconox) and distilled water rinse prior to and
between each boring to prevent cross-contamination.
Soil Sampling and Analysis
T
Soil samples will be collected just below the ground surface, 3.0 feet bgs, and at 6.0
feet bgs from.each boring and.retained for.analytical testing..The soil-samples will be
sealed, labeled, and placed in an ice-chilled cooler. A total of eighteen soil samples
will be collected and retained for quantitative chemical analysis. Following collection,
the samples will be transported by a lab courier to Calscience Environmental
Laboratories (Calscience), a California-certified analytical laboratory, under proper
chain-of-custody procedures.,
The nine soil samples collected from soil borings immediately adjacent to the
`-tr na sformer vault (SB-1}t'hrougESB=3)-wiiI-be-analyzeVor Total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH)'as mineral oil by USEPA Method 8015B (M)With'silica gel
..cleanup. The remaining nine soil samples will be put on hold and run if initial soil
sampling results indicate that further characterization is necessary.
Page:
213
