Linne Road
Tracy CA 95376
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (SJCIEHD) had reviewed "Work
Plan — Monitoring Well Installation & Geoprobe Investigation" dated June 24, 2003
prepared and submitted on your behalf by Geological Technics Inc. (GTI) and has the
following comments.
The work plan proposes the installation of one shallow groundwater monitoring well for
investigation of the lateral definition of the groundwater contamination, and a geoprobe
investigation to more narrowly define the extent of the soil contamination around the
former underground storage tank (UST) pit location. The work plan proposes to begin
the geoprobe investigation 20-25 feet northwest of this area.
In correspondence dated March 3, 2003, SJCIEHD requested investigation of a potential
NNW/SSE trending sand channel, based on the boring logs from monitoring well MW-1
and soil boring SB-1, both of which noted a sand interval at 10 feet below surface grade
(bsg). SJCIEHD requested that this suspected channel sand body be investigated with
borings located approximately 25-30 feet NNW of MW-1, and 20 feet SSE of SB-1, and
that grab groundwater samples be obtained from these borings at depths of 10, 15 and
30 feet bsg. This correspondence was sent to you prior to the site meeting on
March 27, 2003, which was held to discuss with you the current site status and direction
the investigation and remediation should take. GTI has apparently confused this request
to investigate a potential migration pathway for groundwater with the geoprobe
investigation they subsequently proposed to investigate the extent of soil contamination
around the former UST pit.
SJCIEHD approves the submitted work plan with the following conditions:
1. One shallow monitoring well will be installed as described in the work plan, to
total depth of 20 feet bsg. Following development of the well it will be added
to the routine quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling program
already in place at this site.
2. Advancement of up to ten geoprobe soil borings will proceed, but location of
the borings must begin within five feet of previously encountered soil
contamination, and proceed outward from that distance, until no
contamination is apparent or PID readings are 100 ppmv. Proposed depth of
the borings is 20 feet below surface grade (bsg). Soil samples for description
and potentially for laboratory analysis will be collected at five-foot intervals.
