Wastewater from meat processing is
discharged and treated in a grease trap before flowing into a series of four unlined wastewater
ponds prior to being discharged to a land application area for final disposal. Wastewater is
applied to the land application area by a series of checks which are rotated to allow adequate
resting time between applications.
On 13 February 2013, Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board staff inspected the
wastewater treatment and disposal system. Below is a summary of staffs observations and
conversation with facility staff. A photographic inspection log is enclosed for your information.
• Signage was posted around the ponds to preclude public access.
• An aerator was installed in the primary wastewater pond in 2012.
• Odors associated with wastewater were minimal in the vicinity of the wastewater ponds.
• No odors or nuisance conditions were observed at the perimeter of the land application area.
• No runoff of wastewater from the land application area was observed.
• Solids are containerized and disposed of at Sacramento Rendering. Board staff informed the
facility manager that the solids disposal data had not been submitted in the monthly
monitoring reports as required.
• Facility staff mentioned a possible facility expansion in 2013 or 2014.
In summary, no violations of Order R5-2002-0225 were observed at the time of inspection.
Review of Monitoring Reports
Staff has reviewed the quarterly groundwater monitoring reports and note that the 2012 Annual
Monitoring Report has not been received by our office. Additionally, staff notes that Table 2
(Summary of laboratory Reports For Quarterly Monitoring Parameters) in the quarterly
groundwater monitoring reports appears to have inconsistent data that may be a result of
transcription error. However, copies of analytical sheets for laboratory tested constituents are
not being submitted, therefore staff cannot determine the source or reason for the inconsistent
groundwater data being reported.
KARL E.
