The methods used in this investigation were standard techniques for shallow soil boring
installation and sampling. Field activities were documented in a field notebook. The
drilling was performed by a licensed drilling contractor (C57) with OSHA 40 hour
HAZWOPER training. Soil boring logs are provided in Appendix A.
I
2.4 SOIL SAMPLING
During drilling, a continuous soil core was collected to the total depth drilled. The
continuous soil core was logged for lithologic description by the field geologist.
Sediment description included variation in color, grain size, density, texture, relative
moisture, plasticity according to the Unified Soil Classification System, and any other
pertinent data particularly odor and staining. The depths of discrete soil samples
collected from the continuous core are shown on the soil boring g PP logs in Appendix A.
The soil samples were sealed with Teflon sheets and capped with plastic end caps secured
with duct tape. Samples were labeled with date, time, location and depth and placed in an
ice chest maintained at 4 degrees C. The deepest sampled interval from each completed
,,✓ boring was submitted for laboratory analysis. Due to field observations of apparent soil
staining, additional samples were sent for analysis from borings IL-4, IL-7, and SB-1.
All samples were sent under chain-of-custody to a Ford approved laboratory for analysis.
The chain-of-custody forms were filled out on site, signed, and dated. The original was
shipped with the samples and the remaining copies were retained by ENTRIX personnel.
A copy of each chain-of-custody form is provided in Appendix B.
2.5 SAMPLE ANALYSIS
The soil samples collected during the site assessment were analyzed as follows:
• Soil borings advanced near former inground hoist locations were analyzed for
total petroleum hydrocarbon as hydraulic fluid (TPHhf) by EPA Method 8015
Modified, hydraulic fluid standard.
• Soil borings advanced near the septic system were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D) by EPA Method 8015 Modified, diesel standard,
2-3
