05 January 2009
AGE-NC Project No. 09-1664
equipped with 1.25-inch probing rods. The Geoprobe advances soil probe borings using a hydraulic
hammer to drive soil sampling tools to specified depths. Soil borings will be sampled at discreet
five-foot intervals using a 1.125-inch Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four six-inch
stainless steel sleeves. Upon sample retrieval, the ends of the second sleeve will be covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Based on the amount of sample recovery, either of the
leading sample sleeves will be preserved for possible laboratory analysis by covering the exposed
ends of the sleeve with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps and sealed with tape.
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring location,
depth, time, date, and sampler's initials.Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
a chilled container, under ice, and will be transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a
CDPH-certified laboratory.
Soil encountered in the borings will be visually classified by an AGE personnel in accordance with
the Unified Soil Classification System. Additionally, soil samples will be field-screened for the
presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter (OVM), equipped with
photo-ionization detector(PID).
4.2. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water table,as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample, to collect a grab ground water sample. Once ground water has been
encountered, a hydropunch-equivalent water sampling device will be driven two to three feet into
the water-bearing zone.Ground water samples will be collected with a hydropunch-equivalent water
sampling assembly fitted with one-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted temporary well screen. Each
ground water sample will be extracted by lowering a bailer through the hollow center of the drive
rods and into the screen section.Depending on subsurface and drilling conditions, grab ground water
samples may be collected directly through the geoprobe using a disposable tubing.
Ground water samples will be collected into laboratory supplied containers.Ground water samples
will analyzed for the constituents listed in Section 3.3. and collected into respective, laboratory-
supplied, 40-m1 VOA vials and a 1-liter amber bottle, both without preservative. Following
collection, the samples will be appropriately labeled, placed on ice, and kept in a cooler until
delivered to the laboratory for analysis.Chain-of-custody protocols will be used to document sample
custody transfer from the field to the analytical laboratory.A chain-of-custody form will accompany
the samples.
W. ,W GeOCOviren=806*1i
