SCOPE OF WORK
Plannin2 and Permits
ATC/Smith Technology has completed the soil boring permit application for the proposed
subsurface investigation. Upon approval of this workplan a permit application and associated fees
will be submitted to PHS/EHD. ATC/Smith Technology will also schedule field personnel and
equipment, notify Underground Service Alert to locate underground utilities as required, and
perform any other necessary field preparation and job start-up activities.
Advancement of Soil Barin s
To determine the extent of soil and groundwater contamination at the site, three soil borings will
be advanced to approximately 60 feet below ground surface (bgs) during this phase of the
investigation. Two of the borings will be placed inside the excavation area of the former 3,000-
gallon UST at the approximate locations where the 1987 soil samples were collected. The third
soil boring will be placed inside the excavation area of the former 7,000-gallon UST at the
approximate location where the 1987 soil sample was collected. Proposed boring locations are
shown on Figure 2.
The three soil borings will be advanced to depths of approximately 60 feet using a hollow stem
auger equipped drill rig. Drilling will be conducted by a State-licensed (C57) drilling company. A
field geologist will be present to log all drill cuttings and soil samples. Descriptions of soil types
encountered and sample collection intervals will be recorded on boring/well logs. Soil samples
will be collected at five foot intervals or changes in lithology, field screened with a PID, and up to
two samples from each of the three borings will be submitted for laboratory analysis. All drill
cuttings will be spread out on visquene plastic until laboratory results are received.
Groundwater is estimated to exist at 55 feet bgs at the site. If groundwater is encountered in the
borings, a Hydropunch groundwater sampling probe will be hydraulically driven into the ground
in each boring to depths of 1 to 2 feet beneath the groundwater piezometric surface. A field
geologist will be present to supervise the investigation and collect groundwater samples and
descriptions of field conditions encountered and sample collection details will be recorded.
Following soil and groundwater sample collection the open sampling holes will be tremie grouted
to the surface with neat cement.
If field observations (i.e., visual inspection, PID readings, olfaction) indicate the presence of
petroleum hydrocarbons in any of the borings, additional borings may be required to fully
delineate the extent of contamination. The need for additional borings will be discussed with
PHS/EHD and the client prior to performing additional work.
w:11498ftepotUs wkp.doc 2
•
SI"H
