JUN-29-1998 17:28 CAMBRIA 510 420 9170 P.03i08
Mr. Huts Huwc
June 29, lyes '-' CAMBRIA
For the remainder of the borings, soil samples will not be collected above the water table, unless a lithologic
unit is encountered for which physical data has not been acquired. Our standard field procedures arc
presented as Attachment A. Soil observed to contain hydrocarbons will not be used for physical analyses.
Ground Water Sampling:For each of the borings,Cambria will collect discrete ground water samples at five
ft intervals at and below the water table using either a Hydropunch"sampler for water samples only, or a
MicroProbe"sampler(2"diameter version of the Simulprobe")if ground water and soil samples need to be
taken simultaneously.
Chemical Analysis:The soil and ground water samples will be analyzed for TPHg, benzene, toluene, ethyl
benzene, and xylenes,(BTEX)by EPA Methods 8015/8020 at a California certified laboratory. The samples
will also be analyzed for oxygenated fuel additives Methyl tert-Butyl Ether(MTBE).Tertiary Amyl Methyl
Ether(TAME),di-Isopropyl Ether(DIPS),Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether(ETBE),tert-Butanol,and ethanol using EPA
Method 8260. Methanol will be analyzed by EPA Method 8015 (modified). Proposed detection limits for
the oxygenated fuel chemical compounds in water are as follows:MTBE-5 pg/L,TAME-5 pg/L,DIPS-
5 pg/L, ETBE - 5 pg/L, ten-Butanol - 100 pg/L, ethanol - 500 µg/L, and methanol - I mg/L. Proposed
detection limits for the oxygenated fuel chemical compounds in soil are as follows:MTBE-0.1 mg/kg,TAME
-0.1 mg/kg,DIPE-0.1 mgtkg,ETBE-0.1 mg/kg,tert-Butanol-5.0 mom,ethanol-25 mg/kg,and methanol
- 1.0 mg/kg. The samples will be analyzed for lead scavengers ethylene dibromide(EDB)and 1,2-DCA by
EPA Method 8260.
Physical Analysis:One soil sample from each lithological unit that has not had physical analyses performed
will be analyzed for permeability to water, porosity, density, organic carbon content.
Periodic Ground Water Extraction and Sampling: During the CPT field work,Cambria will pump water
from existing ground water monitoring well MW-1 into drums. Samples will be taken at the beginning and
end of the pumping. The ground water flaw rate and volume of water that the well produces will be noted.
Cambria will use this information to design a program of periodic:pumping for the well. For example, the
well may be pumped dry on a weekly basis, and the pumped water disposed of monthly.
Reporting: After the analytic results are received,we will prepare a subsurface investigation report that,at
a minimum, will contain:
• Descriptions of the boring installations and sampling methods,
Boring logs,
• Tabulated soil and ground water analytic results,
3
