•' 1
Mr. Sam Savig
C A B R I A September 24, 2001
40 Cambria proposes to keep the GWE system shut down until at least the first quarter 2002.
Cambria will request 5-day turn around time for the quarterly monitoring samples, which are
scheduled to be collected in January 2002. Cambria will then expedite the first quarter 2002
quarterly monitoring report, and include recommendations as to whether the GWE system should
be restarted.
The GWE system, which extracted groundwater from well EW-1 at approximately 5 gallons per
minute, was started on March 10, 2000 and operated continuously through the start of the third
quarter 2001 until shut down on July 23, 2001. Analytical results from the GWE system are
summarized in Table 2. Laboratory analytical reports for GWE system sampling are included as
Attachment B. An estimate of contaminant mass removed by the GWE system through
July 23, 2001 is included in Table 3 and summarized in the following table.
MASS REMOVAL BY GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION
Constituent Total Removed
Total Hydrocarbons 1.8 lbs
MTBE 15.2 lbs
Water 2,295,500 gals
Sampling and Analyses: Cambria monitored and sampled the remediation system on a bi-
weekly basis during the quarter. The system effluent was sampled on a bi-weekly basis, and the
other remediation system samples were collected on a monthly basis. The samples were analyzed
for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and MTBE
by EPA Method 8020 and MTBE by EPA Method 8260. Analytical results for the GWE system
are summarized in Table 2.
ANTICIPATED FOURTH QUARTER 2001 ACTIVITIES
Groundwater Monitoring: Blaine will gauge and sample all wells and tabulate the data.
Cambria will prepare the third quarter groundwater monitoring report. Cambria will monitor the
well concentrations to determine if the groundwater extraction will remain shut down through the
first quarter of 2002. A recommendation as to whether the groundwater extraction system should
be restarted will be included in the first quarter 2002 quarterly monitoring report.
2
