Hunter & Associates for the above referenced site.
The work plan states that soil sampling will begin at 20 feet below surface grade
(bsg). Soil contamination was confirmed at 15 feet bsg in previous
investigations. In order to define the soil contamination laterally, soil sampling
should begin at 15 feet below surface grade. In addition, the well completion
schematic indicates the total depth of the boring to be 75 feet. The drilling
should continue below 80 feet bsg since soil contamination was evidenced at 80
feet bsg in both LB1 and MW4. The vertical extent of the contamination must be
confirmed.
The monitoring well screens must intercept the first water encountered below
grade (which was about 59.4 feet bsg in July 1998). Monitoring well screens
should be limited to 20 feet in length. If contamination extends beyond 80 feet
bsg, two casings should be installed in the borehole. One casing should be
screened to monitor deep groundwater and the second casing should be
screened to monitor first groundwater. The well completion schematic in the
work plan shows a 6 inch hollow auger boring. The borings should be drilled
with 8-inch hollow stem augers.
The proposed placements of MW5 and MW6 are 70 to 80 feet away from the
former underground storage tank (UST) locations. Monitoring well 5 should be
placed within 40 feet of the former UST locations. If MW5 appears
contaminated, MW6 can be placed further than 40 feet from the former UST
locations.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
