The UST system that was installed during 1995 is state of the art equipment and meets all federal UST
requirements. To my knowledge, there has not been any indication or alarm signaling the release of motor
fuels from the new UST system. hi addition, results of soil sampling performed at the excavation limits of
the new UST complex revealed no significant source of hydrocarbons. Therefore, it is assumed that the
request from your agency to assess groundwater conditions west of the UST complexes must be focusing
on possible fuel releases from the former UST complex. In response to that I would point out the soil
sample results obtained at 21.0 and 31.0 feet below grade from borings 13-1,B-2, and B-3 which were
drilled by Pacific during January, 1996. These samples were collected from within the current capillary i
fringe and saturated zones. There were no contaminants(or odors)detected in soil at these depths. If there
were appreciable groundwater contamination migrating west from this possible source area, these samples
would have identified it. Since they did not, it is reasonable to believe that there is no appreciable source
of groundwater contamination in this area of the site. In addition, these data preclude the need to
investigate any further west.
Considering the above information, Chevron feels that further assessment at the subject-site is
unwarranted. Instead, I would reiterate our previous request for case closure. Your reconsideration of this
request is greatly appreciated.--
if you have any questions or comments, please contact me at(510)842-8695. I
Sincerely,
Brett L.
