The soil was excavated from beneath the
removed pump island where hydrocarbon contamination had been indicated
from soil samples collected previously. The soil was hauled to the sand
and gravel facility located on Moffat Boulevard. To minimize uncontrolled
aeration, the soil was placed on and covered with plastic.
iA Photovac TIP, using a photoionization detector (PID) was used to screen
two soil samples collected from each of the 18 soil piles. The PID was
calibrated with a 50 parts per million (ppm) benzene to set a reference
for relative comparison of the field readings. Field screening readings
ranged from 50 to 460 parts per million by volume (ppmv) and are shown on
Table 1.
TABLE 1
PID FIELD SCREENING READINGS
SAMPLE POINT READING my AMPLE POINT READING my
SP-37 340 SP-55 420
SP-38 350 SP-56 350
SP-39 270 SP-57 370
SP-40 240 SP-58 420
SP-41 380 SP-59 460
SP-42 375 SP-60 430
SP-43 380 SP-61 380
SP-44 355 SP-62 460
SP-45 150 SP-63 290
SP-46 290 SP-64 300
SP-47 390 SP-65 420
SP-48 375 SP--66 460
SP-49 420 SP-67 325
SP-511 340 SP-68 300
SP-51 440 SP-69 390
SP 52 400 SP 70 360
SP-53 440 SP-71 50
SP-54 410 SP-72 50
t
