East Bay MUD - 3 - 10 March 1995
Memo #2
I. The "zero line" has been estimated by installation of monitoring wells, however, the distance
between contaminated wells and uncontaminated wells is a minimum of 50 feet and a
maximum of 120 feet. Fine-tuning a remediation system based on the known "zero line" may
be difficult.
- Is fine-hmirg of the rer.iec iadon system necessary?
- How nuich of the contansiriation plume is going to be irnpbctctw.d by the
mystern?
ffiORIIVIEDATION PROCEDURE
A. According to the RAP, three enzymes will be used to assist in the treatment of the
hydrocarbon contamination. The enzymes, monomethanoxigenase, alcoholdehydrogenase, and
aldehydehydrogenase, have been isolated from bacteria that produced them. Enzymes are
highly specific for the reactions they catalyze. These enzymes assist in the break down of
methane, alcohol, and aldehydes.
- How are the three added enzymes able to assist in the break dawn of petroletmt
hydrocaaborns?
- Hary are the enzymes mile to break down hydrncczrbans outs7ide the bacterid cells m*hout
at energy source?
- Do the three enzymes listed require cofactors to react with.hydrocaabons?
- If the enzymes do react with hydroccabons, u*hout additional energy to complete
hy+drocabon bmakdou r; wiz! the enzymes be inactivated m the reactions?
- It a7peow that the enzymes are acting more as a sudhctart than a catalyst Whit evidence
is provided to the contrary?
B. The RAP states that the enzymes were used for remediation of creosote and dioxin.
- FiTkwt haw the three listed enzymes would dist m the break down of creosote and
diax&L
- How do enzymes that breads down creosote and a mxxr; break down petroleum
hydrocabons as uvU?
C. According to the RAP, the enzymes are "stabilized and concentrated into crystalline form".
During application at the site, the enzymes are "reconstituted" with ground water.
- Fxplain these procedums.
D. Biosurfactants, amino acids, and air are added, mixed with the enzymes and extracted ground
water, and reinjected into the subsurface.
E. According to the RAP, biosurfactants enhance the contact time between the enzymes and the
contaminants.
. FVk*t how this procedum workL
- What is the stofi bmt? Is it biodegradable?
- Will the siafoctarrt act as a soil washer, transfenirg hydrocarbons from soil to ground
water?
WIU the action of the naryactart pmnw t detection of hydrocabors by the Ir maMW
F. According to the RAP, amino acids will promote the rapid growth of the natural bacterial
population.
- Is ernof the na tad bacterid population a nrt1por objective of this project?
- Will the same bacteria drat use amino acids as a food source, use BTEX sound wog s as a
food source?
