The bench scale test is discussed in
Section 2.3 of the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the Stockton Service
Center submitted to your office in September 1994. A groundwater sample
was collected from MW-8 at the Stockton Service Center and submitted to
ETI/Chugach, L.L.C. for the bench scale test. The groundwater sample was
exposed to the ETEC multi-enzyme complex and a sample was collected from
the effluent. This sample was submitted to Hughes Analytical Laboratory
for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) . The
results of these analyses are attached.
A sample was also collected from a groundwater monitoring well upgradient
of the plume and submitted to Curtis & Tompkins, Ltd. for nitrate, nitrite,
ammonia, and TKN analyses. The results of these analyses are attached.
The comparison of these two sets of results indicates that an increase in
the concentrations of ammonia and TKN have occurred through the
bioremediation process. Nitrate and nitrite were not detected in either
sample although the detection limit used in the bench scale test sample was
higher than that of the upgradient sample. According to the laboratory,
this is because of matrix interference.
The nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels are all less than California and
federal water quality goals. Because TO represents a comprehensive
quantification of nitrogen from.all compounds containing nitrogen in the
9582
40429601\st kb res.wp5
i
