An aliquot of each sample was taken from core <br /> centers with stainless steel implements, immediately weighed, and <br /> sealed in septum-capped vials. Additionally, vials were prepared <br /> in Lne basue fashion to represent a method blank, reagent grade BTX <br /> standards, an analyte-fortified sample spike and sample replicate. <br /> Each vial was heated for a period of one hour at 90 OC during <br /> which time light aromatics were expected to equilibrate in distri- <br /> bution between sample and headspace. Headspace gases were subse- <br /> quently analyzed by gas chromatography with photoionization <br /> detection. Response of the chromatographic system to samples was <br /> compared with response to standards prepared with reagent grade <br /> benzene, toluene and xylene for purposes of qualitative and quan- <br /> titative interpretation. <br /> Details of the analytical methodology are consistent with <br /> requirements specified in "Guidelines for Addressing Fuel Leaks," <br /> Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Francisco Bay Region, <br /> revised 1986; the preparation procedures used are described in <br /> detail in "Sonication Extraction," Method 3550, and "Headspace <br /> Method," Method 5020 for BTX in "Test Methods for Evaluating <br /> Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods," U.S. EPA, SW-846, 2nd <br /> edition, revised 1984. <br /> Results of analyses are summarized in Table 1.
