stripping has been effective in other locations in meeting these discharge
requirements
' 6.2.2 Alternative 2 Air SparginglVapor Extraction
An air sparging and vapor extraction system would be installed at the Stockton
' Service Center to accomplish this alternative The treatment system would consist
of air injection wells, vapor extraction wells, an oil-free air compressor, an air delivery
' piping system, a vapor extraction piping system, and an off-gas treatment system To
facilitate use of the Stockton Service Center during remediation, the piping systems
' would be placed underground and designed to allow for heavy vehicle loading To
determine the effectiveness of the remediation, a set of monitoring wells near the
perimeter of the plume would be required Biodegradation of the contaminants
' would be enhanced by aerating the groundwater
Although air sparging is readily applicable to petroleum hydrocarbon
' contaminated groundwater, it is most effective at sites with coarse grained aquifer
material The saturated zone material at the Stockton Service Center is relatively
fine grained To determine whether air sparging applicable for this site, a pilot test
would be required
6.2.3 Alternative 3 In Situ Bioremediation
An active in situ bioremediation system would require injection of microbes,
' nutrients, and an oxygen source into the aquifer This could be accomplished at the
Stockton Service Center by using MW-8 which appears to be near the center of the
' plume Platelet and nutrient studies would be required to determine the microbial
and nutrient requirements to produce effective remediation MW-1 could be used
as monitoring well to determine the effectiveness of the remediation The system
rmay also require extraction to minimize the potential for spreading the plume
Hydrogen peroxide may be added in low concentrations to provide oxygen and
' reduce bacterial clogging near the injection point
A passive bioremediation system would only require monitoring provided
' sufficient microbial populations are present to degrade the contaminants Monitoring
could be performed in MW-1 and MW-8 to determine the extent and effectiveness
of remediation Platelet and nutrient studies would be required to determine if this
' treatment scenario is feasible
93822 East Bay Municipal Utility District
40429500 aca 18 Stockton Svc Ctr -site Assessment/Remedial Options
