This project involved extensive
decontamination of 18 miles of interstate highway utilizing high
pressure low-volume hydroblasters. This project was conducted on an
around the clock basis and was successfully completed in only two (2)
days under contract with Caltrans.
4. DECONTAMINATION OF A SECTION OF THE MISSION CREEK
CHANNEL IN SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA. This project was
conducted from May 13th through May 30th, 1984, under the primary
direction of the California Department of Fish and Game. A total of
approximately 3200 gallons of sulfuric acid, nitric acid and copper
sulfate inadvertently discharged, via a vacuum truck, into the Mission
Creek Channel. Subsequently, Mark performed massive fluid and
channel bed removal work and extensive work associated with
decontaminating the concrete channel lining. Initial emergency response
to this incident was made at the request of Caltrans after local officials
had evacuated approximately 26 square blocks of downtown Santa
Barbara. Mark's emergency response team successfully vented acids and
subsequently neutralized all discharged wastes enabling the citizens of
the area to return to their homes.
5. MICHAELSON LABORATORY - CHINA LAKE NAVAL WEAPONS
TESTING CENTER. In August, 1984, the research section of the
basement of the Michaelson Laboratory at China Lake, California,
became submerged in mud and water resulting from massive local
thunder showers and subsequent abnormal run-off: Suspended in the
mud and debris were myriads of unlabeled hazardous substances.
Because of the highly reactive and volatile nature of substances known
to be inventoried in the basement, technical assistance was provided by
various government experts. The project was successfully completed
under the supervision of Mark within the urgent time frame established
by the government.
6. CLEANUP OF 6 MILES OF STREAM BED IN MARCH, 1986. A dry
wash in the Taft area was contaminated with crude oil from nearby
oilfields. This project was extremely critical to the Department of Fish
and Game as this was in an endangered species area with the San
Joaquin Kit Fox, the Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizard and the ' Giant
Kangaroo Rat. Mark developed a cleanup effort to clean up all crude
oil without destroying or endangering the dens and resting grounds of
these animals.
7. Response to the Loma Preatia earthquake at the request of the
California Department of Transportation as a technical expert for Haz-
Mat evaluation of the Cypress Freeway and Oakland Bay Bridge.
8. Environmental Assessment of all B.P. Service Stations during the 1989
Loma Preatia earthquake prior to B.P. management allowing any fuel
to be delivered to stations. This was accomplished by developing
testing systems to pressure test 46 stations and certify they are tight
in a 96 hour period.
9. Managed numerous environmental mitigation projects in the State of
California. (References will be provided as requested).
