The CAP
consists of a proposed ozone microsparge system that willuse ten air sparge wells with each well drilled to
approximately 20 to 30 feet below ground surface. The radius of influence for each well is expected to be about 30 feet.
The CAP is approved as written. Prior to implementing the CAP,a 30-day public comment period is required. A.
public participation notice will be posted on the third floor of the San Joaquin County PHS/EHD offices on October 2,
2001. After the 30 days have passed and providing that the CAP does not need to be revised due to public comment.
you may begin the installation of the proposed ozone microsparge system.
Be aware that ozone microsparge systems installed at other San Joaquin sites.(specifically,437 Miner in Stockton)
resulted in hydrocarbon contaminant concentrations detected in upgradient monitoring wells that were previously"non-
detect"in these constituents. As with any new technology, vigilant monitoring of adjacent groundwater monitoring
wells will be required at Service Station 5886 to ensure that the contaminant of concern(methyl tertiary butyl ether)is
successfully destroyed and notjust migrating to a new location in the subsurface. You will also need to cease the
weekly purging of impacted groundwater that has been used for interim remediation at the site. Although the periodic
purging of monitoring well MW-3 and the underground storage tank cavity well has had some success,it should not be
used in conjunction with the more aggressive ozone microsparge system, lest it interfere with the successful operation
of the remedial system.
As you know,I have resigned from San Joaquin County to pursue other employment opportunities, effective October 3,
2001. Please address all future correspondence to Margaret Lagorio, Supervising REHS at PHS/EHD.
