Box 1839
Santa Monica, CA 90406
USA STOCKTON AND LODI STATION, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I am encouraged by our meeting of Friday, May 8. It appears
that a successful remediation of the ground water problem at your
two San Joaquin County sites will eventually be completed.
USA STOCKTON STATION
At this meeting, Applied Geosystems, consultant to USA Petroleum
Corporation (USA) , presented parts of a proposed workplan for
investigation of the extent of contamination at USA' s Stockton
gas station. They intend to place three monitoring wells on-site
in order to determine the direction of ground water flow and
begin to describe the extent of ground water contamination. The
possibility of placing a fourth well off-site to the west was
brought up as a means of determining if underground tanks at
another location contributed to the ground water contamination.
Ms. Laurie Cotulla of the San Joaquin Local Health District
agreed to check tank tests at the operating gas station across
the street. Location of utilities near the site may help
determine if contamination came from off-site. Utility trench
backfill provides preferential flow pathways in the low
permeability soils in this area. Andy Lush, of Applied
Geosystems, said a completed workplan would be ready for USA's
review in a week. Copies should be ready for review by the
County and Regional Board by 8 June 1987.
USA LODI STATION
The contamination at this site is due solely to the practices at
the USA gas station. No other apparent hydrocarbon source exists
nearby. The full extent of contamination in soils and ground
water must be determined before effective remediation can begin.
In order to do this in a timely fashion, a soil sampling program
should be scheduled along with the initial monitoring well
installations. Ground water gradients at this site will be
impacted by the variable pumping at the nearby irrigation and
municipal supply wells. The scope of the ground water cleanup
may increase with nearby pumping, so an expedient investigation
is in order. The workplan for this site will be sent to
