i
meter will be used to screen soil samples as drilling progresses _
Operations commenced at 0820 , a core was taken Brom 1 ' to 2' 6" ,
it consisted of brown clay loam & gravels to 1" an size. A
portion of the core was preserved, but no analysis was run.
Augers were advanced to 5' , and a core was taken trom 5' to 6' 6"
Recovery consisted of 15" of tan, dry sandy clay w/occassaonal
reddish staining, (iron oxide ) One of the acetal tubes was
promptly sealed with teflon tape & plastic end caps which were
thoroughly wrapped with duct tape. The tube was labeled & placed
on ice for preservation. Another portion of core was placed an a
plastic bag, tightly sealed, and allowed to set for 5--10 minutes
to permit any petroleum constituents to volatnze The probe of
the PID meter was introduced into the headspace of the bag to
measure any vapors, the instrument gave a reading of 0 (aero )
Augers were advanced to 10 ' , a second clean core barrel was
lowered into the flights, and a core was taken from 10' to 11 ' 6"
The core was described by the geologist, and a portion preserved
as detailed above Another portion was screened for volatiles as
before.
• Using the same procedures as above, cords were taken at 5 foot
intervals from 15 ' to 35' , details of blow counts, recovery,
lithology and screening are given on 1'I,ATE 1X After completion
rd w
of coring operations, the hole was coveeith a wooden pallet
pending grouting after completion of activities The augers were
thoroughly steamcleaned on location, and the coring assemblies
were also decontaminated and filled with clean metal tubes for
the next soil boring Drilling spoils & unused core materials
were placed in metal drums, tightly sealed & labeled, and stored
on site.
The rig was then mobilized on the location marked for soil boring
"C" (PLATE VIII , ) and drilling started at 1000 hours Augers
were advanced as detailed above, with cores taken at 5' intervals
from 5' to 35' , and sealed & preserved by WJH field protocol
described earlier There was no evidence of contamination & no
readings were recorded on bagged samples screened with the PID
meter Again, drilling spoils & unused core material were placed
in sealed & labeled drums & stored on site Refer to PLATE X for
details of blow counts, core recovery, lithology and other data
The surface was covered to prevent the possibility of extraneous
materials entering the hole
Aiter decontaminating flights & coring equipment , the rig was
mobilized on soil boring "D" as shown on PLATE V111 . Cores were
. taken from 1' -2' 6" , 5' -6' 6" , and at 5 foot intervals to bottom at
3616" The cores were described, and samples sealed and
6
