In addition to screening the trash, as a safeguard, the facility policy is to
double-check all contents of the containers labeled "trash" prior to disposal in order to
prevent any hazardous wastes from entering the solid waste stream.
#11/79: The universal waste storage locker was immediately cleaned; the broken glass and
residue were removed and managed as hazardous waste. To eliminate any chance of
broken glass going unnoticed in the u-waste locker, staff removed the cardboard from
the grates. Technicians monitor this area daily to ensure no broken glass is released;
if any broken glass is discovered it is cleaned up immediately, and managed as
hazardous waste. See photos, attached.
#22: The battery missing a cap was packed in the hazardous waste drum for damaged
automotive batteries. The soiled cardboard was removed from the battery pallet and
packed in a hazardous waste drum. Damaged automotive batteries are packaged in
drums with absorbent to eliminate any possibility of release. See photo, attached.
#24 During the inspection we explained that the facility manages aerosol cans in a safe
manner in accordance with the US Dept. of Transportation special permit, DOT-SP
12842, in accordance with 49 CFR § 107.107. This applies to aerosols cans with
flammable, corrosive, poison, and non-flammable contents, as they all contain
flammable propellants (hazard classes 2.1 and 2.2). The following controls are in place
to prevent discharge of contents: cans must be empty, capped or valve stem removed.
See attached special permit authorization.
#32 The tank assessment certification was received on 7/14/11; copy provided on 8/3/11.
#35 The used oil and antifreeze tanks are inspected daily for signs of leaks and to ensure
