In certain locations <br /> (Test Pits 2, 3, and 7) the pipelines were identified in their anticipated location,though in Test <br /> Pit 7, they appeared to trend more in a north south alignment than anticipated. Based on this <br /> revised alignment,Test Pits 8 through 13 were excavated, and the pipelines were encountered <br /> where expected. The pipelines were not found in Test Pits 1,4, 5, or 6. Test Pits 11, 13, 7, 9, <br /> and 8 were excavated near these locations based on information from test pits where the <br /> I pipelines were located. In all, Clayton excavated 13 test pits on the property. The locations of <br /> these test pits are shown in Figure 3. These test pits were typically approximately 30 feet long, 2 <br /> feet wide, and 4 feet deep. <br /> The pipelines were generally noted.to be at a depth of 2 to 4 feet, and were typically 2 to 3 feet <br /> apart. Overall, the pipelines appeared to be in tact and in good condition,with the exception of <br /> in Test Pit 9,where hydrocarbon staining and odor were observed. The former pipelines were <br /> tapped in two locations to determine whether,any liquid was remaining in them. The pipelines <br /> did not appear to contain liquid. <br /> The visually impacted excavated soil was stockpiled on plastic sheeting and sampled for <br /> disposal, and clean soil from an on-site stockpile was used to backfill the pit. The impacted soil <br /> was transported to an appropriate facility on June 3, 2005. <br /> 6.0 SOIL BORING INVESTIGATION <br /> I6.1 INITIAL SOIL BORING INSTALLATION <br /> The soil borings at the site were advanced using direct push GeoProbe rig with continuous macro <br /> core sampling. Soil cores were retained in 2-inch diameter acetate liners, examined for soil <br /> I properties including relative moisture content, competency, and other observable distinguishing <br /> I characteristics, and described on field boring logs in general conformance with the Unified Soil <br /> Classification System. Soil boring logs are presented in Appendix A. Clayton evaluated field <br /> observations and notations of odor to select the specific samples that were submitted for <br /> laboratory analysis. Soil samples retained for laboratory analysis were cut from the acetate liners, <br /> capped with Teflon tape and plastic end caps, and placed in a pre-chilled cooler for transportation <br /> to the laboratory under formal chain-of-custody documentation. <br /> I Soil borings were advanced to a depth of 6 feet, and a sample collected at that depth. If no <br /> evidence of hydrocarbons was observed in the boring, the boring was terminated. If evidence of <br /> hydrocarbons (visual or olfactory)was observed, the boring was extended vertically to <br /> I groundwater, and additional soil samples collected to provide information on the vertical <br /> distribution of hydrocarbons in soil. <br /> I Groundwater samples were collected from borings where field evidence of hydrocarbon impact <br /> was observed, to determine whether groundwater had also been impacted. These borings were <br /> advanced to below the water table and developed into temporary well points for collecting grab <br /> groundwater samples. Once the total depth was achieved, a temporary one-inch outer diameter <br /> PVC casing was placed into the open borehole.
