ILIFers"fulINC.
2.2 Permitting
A SJCEHD drilling permit and a City of Ripon Encroachment permit were required prior
to conducting this investigation. A copy of the drilling and encroachment permits are included in
Appendix B. To ensure that underground utilities at the Site were not disturbed by Site
activities, Versar contacted Underground Service Alert (USA), as required by law, and
contracted California Utility Surveyors to locate potentially unmarked underground utilities at
the Site.
2.3 Site Health and Safety Procedures
A designated Site Safety Officer was appointed for the field investigation. The officer
was responsible for adherence to the Site Health and Safety Plan and was present during drilling
and sampling operations. A copy of the signed Health and Safety Attendance Form is included
as Appendix C.
2.4 Observation of Field Work
The field investigation was conducted on August 6, 1997. This work was observed in the
field by representatives of both B of A and Bank of Stockton. B of A was represented by Ms.
Donna DiRocco with B of A's Environmental Services unit, and Bank of Stockton was
represented by Mr. John Elliott III, with Henshaw Associates, Inc. Neither representative
requested portions of any soil and groundwater samples that were taken(i.e., no split samples).
2.5 Drilling Procedures
Six boreholes were drilled by pushing a two-inch diameter drilling rod utilizing a truck-
mounted Geoprobe 5400 drilling rig. This drilling method was selected over the use of hollow-
stem augers to minimize the volume of soil cuttings generated. A sampler attached to the end of
the drilling rod was used to collect an undisturbed soil sample in polyethylene tubing inside the
sampler. The drilling rod and sampler were then removed from the borehole, the sampler
removed and replaced with a clean sampler, and the drilling rod was pushed down the existing
hole to the next desired sampling depth. Boring logs are presented in Appendix D. Borehole
locations are presented in Figure 2.
Drilling and sampling equipment was either new or was thoroughly cleaned prior to
introduction to the Site, and between boreholes. Decontamination of sampling equipment
comprised washing with laboratory-grade, non-phosphate detergent (i.e., Alconox®); double
rinse in tap water; and final rinse in distilled water. Equipment was allowed to air-dry.
In order to assess if cross-contamination occurred at the Site, three equipment blanks
were collected. One equipment blank was collected from drilling equipment prior to use at the
-98/3622-50 1/Sep04'97 3
