2.0 SITE INVESTIGATION FIELD PROCEDURES AND RESULTS
This section presents a discussion of the telephone interview, Sanborn map review,
permitting, Site health and safety procedures, drilling procedures, soil sampling and analytical
results, and groundwater sampling and analytical results.
2.1 Telephone Interview
To assess the past uses of the property and identify where former facilities and operations
may have been located, Mr. Tim Berger, Versar Senior Geologist, conducted a telephone
interview with Mr. Skatlin, a Ripon City Commissioner and local historian. Mr. Skatlin stated
that the Site had been used as an automobile dealership and repair facility until the 1940s. The
dealership was located in the eastern portion of a Site building, and the repair facility in the
western portion of the building (see Appendix A). Mr. Skatlin recalled the use of small
quantities of gasoline and oil on the Site, but no solvents. Waste oil from the repair facility was
reported to have been likely sold to local farmers for weed control, road oil, and for use in
smudge pots to protect crops from frost damage. The garage/dealership was recalled to have had
one owner. A service station was recalled to have been located at the current site of the Ripon
Athletic Club, located across South Locust Street to the west of the subject Site.
2.2 Sanborn Map Review
Prior to conducting the drilling activities at the Site, Versar reviewed the 1920 Sanborn
fire insurance map. The Sanborn map shows a building labeled as a garage on the western
portion of the Site. The northern portion of the building is labeled with gas and oil indicating
that those substances were stored in that area. A copy of the 1920 Sanborn map is presented in
Appendix A.
2.3 Permitting
A San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health (SJCDEH) drilling permit
and a City of Ripon Encroachment permit were required prior to conducting this investigation.
A copy of the drilling and encroachment permits are included in Appendix B. To ensure that
underground utilities at the Site were not disturbed by Site activities, Versar contacted
Underground Service Alert(USA), as required by law, and contracted California Utility
Surveyors to locate potentially unmarked underground utilities at the Site.
2.4 Site Health and Safety Procedures
A designated Site Safety Officer was appointed for the field investigation. The officer
was responsible for adherence to the Site Health and Safety Plan and was present during drilling
4583-97/3622-500/1un30'97 2
