APPENDIX A DRILLING AND SAMPLING PROTOCOL Permits will be obtained as necessary for all borings before drilling begins. Borings will be drilled using hollow-stem augers. All drilling equipment will be thoroughly steam- cleaned before drilling begins to prevent the introduction of contamination from off-site, and between borings to prevent cross contamination. 'The water from the steam cleaner will be contained so that it will not enter storm drains or become subsurface water. The borings will be logged under, the supervision of the project geologist. All borings will be drilled in such a manner as to prevent cross-contamination between strata. All soil borings will be backfilled with a mixture of cement and bentonite grout. The cuttings and extruded samples from the drilling operation will be contained on-site for- proper disposal as deemed necessary .and appropriate upon receipt of lab results. This disposal will be the responsibility of •the client unless other arrangements have been made in writing. All soil sampies will be properly labeled, including the date, sample location, and project number. Field records will be documented and will consist of the above information and other significant data. The samples will be placed on ice immediately for transport to the laboratory. • Under no circumstances will the samples be opened by anyone other than the lab personnel. Chain of Custody records will be maintained at all times. Samples will not be tested after their sample life has been exceeded according to EPA guide- lines, and will be properly disposed of when their useful life has expired. . All soil sampling equipment will be thoroughly cleaned prior to the beginning of sampling and between samples. Relatively undisturbed soil samples will be taken at intervals of S feet. The soil samples will be taken using brass liners in a split. spoon sampler. The samples will not have headspace in : the liners, and will be immediately sealed in their liners using plastic caps held in place with duct tape. It is understood that the client will retain ownership and responsibility for all samples unless other arrangements have been made in writing.
