I have attached
another complete copy of the First Quarter 1998 Groundwater Monitoring and Sampling Report
prepared by Gettler-Ryan Inc. and dated March 26, 1998. I made this copy directly from my
original report. It appears to contain all the information that you found lacking. Gettler-Ryan's
copy also seems to contain all the information found to be lacking in your report. Accordingly,
we are at a loss to explain why this information might be missing from your copy of the report,
since these copies were all made by the same person at the same time . I also note that you have
not mentioned these items to Unocal previously, despite our meeting to discuss site issues on
April 28, 1998.
Your letter indicates that laboratory data sheets for samples collected from wells U-3 and U-4 on
March 9, 1998 and analyzed for BTEX were not included in the report. This information is
included on the same sheet as the TPPH as gas and MtBE by 8020.
To avoid further confusion,I am including a letter from Sequoia Analytical regarding the quality
control work for their 8260 analysis. In further explanation of Sequoia's letter, Sequoia
Analytical operates 24 hours a day. The quality control data report is run prior to analyzing the
samples. There are quality control data sheets for 3/11/98, but no samples were analyzed on that
date. It takes hours for a 8260 sample analysis to be completed. The analysis was completed
after midnight, which would mean it was completed the following day. . Quality control data
reports are referenced to the samples analyzed by the QC Batch#. The QC Batch#on the
quality control data sheet refers to the samples analyzed on March 12th. Sequoia Analytical is a
State certified lab and I am confident that their procedures and reporting are accurate.
