SITE INVESTIGATION WORKPLAN
at the same depths in each boring.. Handling and exposure of the core to air will be kept to a
minimum to reduce potential for volatilization of aromatic hydrocarbons. A state certified
analytical laboratory will analyze the soil samples for MTBE using USEPA Method 8260.
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Groundwater samples will be collected once the borehole reaches the soil/groundwater interface.
Groundwater will be allowed to enter the borehole through a screened, temporary sampling point
placed by the down-hole direct-push equipment. Groundwater will be extracted using a bottom-
.fill bailer. Approximately four well-point volumes of water will be purged prior to collecting the
groundwater sample. During purging, ESA will measure and record parameters including pH,
conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Purging will continue until the parameters are
relatively stable (± 10%). After purging, groundwater will be transferred into appropriate
glassware, labeled and placed in cool storage prior to transportation to a state-certified analytical
laboratory. Prior to arrival to the site, groundwater sample glassware will be laboratory-cleaned
r and will contain appropriate preservative. A state-certified analytical laboratory will analyze the
{W groundwater samples for MTBE using USEPA Method 8260.
DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES
Down-hole drilling equipment will arrive to the site clean and will be decontaminated using a
r high-pressure wash and detergent after each borehole. Soil samples will be collected in
Ldisposable, one-use-only, acetate liners. Soil cuttings will be placed in a sealed storage drum,
labeled, and left on-site in a secure location pending receipt of analytical results. Groundwater
will be sampled with a dedicated bailer through a slotted, well-point to minimize cross-
contamination from impacted soil and high levels of silt and clay. Down-hole groundwater
sampling equipment (well points) will either be dedicated or thoroughly decontaminated using
t high-pressure wash and detergent between each use.
1.1 REPORTING
i Following completion of the fieldwork, documentation of the assessment procedures and findings
will be presented in a report. That report will be submitted to the SJCEHD for review. The
report will provide recommendations for additional soil and groundwater assessment if it is
warranted, or no further action. The final report will include documentation derived from the soil
boring logs and descriptions, laboratory results of soil and groundwater analysis, and appropriate
drawings locating the boring locations.
PROPOSED SCHEDULE OF IMPLEMENTATION
This workplan will be submitted to the SJCEHD prior to commencing drilling operations.
r Depending on the time required for SJCEHD review and comment,ESA will arrange, through the
LUniversity of the Pacific, a date to commence drilling operations. The SJCEHD will be notified
of the date arranged for the drilling operations.
Environmental Science Associates 5 University ofthe Pacific Site Investigation Work Plan
June 2000 200252
