SITE ASSESSMENT AND REMEDIATION
3 1 EXCAVATION OF FORMER UST AREA
A work plan forexcavation of the former UST was prepared by Geological Audit Services, Inc
(GAS) and submitted to the San Joaquin County Public Health Services - Environmental Health
' Division(PHS-EM) The work plan was approved in a letter from the PHS-EHD dated 11 March
1992 However, excavation procedures did not commence until 1994
' On 11 August 1994, approximately 300 cubic yards of soil were excavated from the former UST
area The soil was excavated by representatives of Bob Evans Trucking (BET) The soil excavation
' was monitored and supervised by representatives of GAS Excavated soil was field screened for
organic vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID) Based upon field screening, the soil was
placed into"clean" and"impacted" stockpiles Approximately 125 cubic yards of impacted soil was
stockpiled on plastic sheeting along the eastern portion of the property Approximately 175 cubic
yards of"clean" soil was stockpiled adjacent to the excavation
• 3 2 COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES
Seven soil samples were collected from the floor and sidewalls of the excavation Each sample was
collected from the excavator bucket using a metric soil sampler loaded with two pre-cleaned 2- by
3-inch brass sleeves The ends of the lead sleeve were covered with aluminum sheets, capped and
' sealed with tape
The samples were then transported under chain-of-custody procedure to Sparger Technology, Inc
' (STI) in Sacramento, California Each sample was analyzed for TPH-g and BTE&X in accordance
with EPA methods 8015m and 8020, respectively No TPH-g or BTE&X were detected in soil
samples collected from the sidewalls or floor of the excavation Analytical results of soil samples are
included in Table 1 The laboratory report and chain-of-custody are included in Appendix B
' 3 3 STOCKPILE SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION
On 11 August 1994, two soil samples were collected from the "clean" stockpiles Each sample was
collected following the protocol detailed in Section 3 2 The samples were then transported to SPI
and analyzed for TPH-g and BTE&X in accordance with the appropriate methods No petroleum
' hydrocarbons were detected in samples from the"clean" stockpiles
. On 2 September 1994, representatives of GAS collected eight samples from the impacted. stockpile
' The samples were transported under chain-of-custody to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI) and
z
